Murphy Yum finds dusty objects from streets, abandoned houses, and flea markets and collects things like home appliances, which are closely related to working bodies. Her videos, photos, and performances utilize the grammar of makeshift installation to reinterpret these objects and their relationship to users.
Her practice is grounded upon empirical observation, and she deliberately extends the sense of shame, exclusion, and vulnerability, exploring how these sensations are revealed through the usage of domestic objects. By repeatedly dismantling and destroying household machines, her work shows how it reaches to a point of exhaustion where their existing functions become useless. For the artist, it is a deconstructive practice which allows her to see, hear, and touch more clearly. Rather than denying vulnerability, the artist challenges it and continues destructive experiments to see the objects closely and emphasizes the romance and innocence inherent in the relationship between ready-made products and bodies.
Murphy's installations create vibrations and sounds. Although her installation looks chaotic, it is part of her practice which explores anti-harmonic rules and rhythms, like a trajectory of life. She describes her work as an unsettled, living installation and an unstratified marionette stage.
Recently, Murphy is exploring images that produce fake nostalgia by focusing on phenomena resulting from fictional manipulations of poor, clumsy, and depleted emotions, including reminiscence. She suggests a fluid and even way of observing the world through her work.

머피염은 길거리, 폐가 그리고 벼룩시장 등에서 고요히 먼지 쌓여가는 것들을 발견하고, 그 중에서도 가정용품과 같은 가사 노동하는 신체와 긴밀한 유대가 있는 사물들을 모으며 기계체에 새로운 리듬을 부여한다. 사물과 사용자의 관계에 주목하며, 이를 임시변통(Makeshift)적 조형설치의 문법을 바탕으로 영상, 사진, 퍼포먼스 등 매체를 통해 재해석한다.
그 가운데 수치, 배제, 취약의 감각을 의도적으로 연장하고, 이 감각의 흔적들이 사물을 통해 어떻게 드러나는지 관찰하는데에 관심을 둔다. 가정용 기계에 해체, 파괴와 고갈의 행위를 반복적으로 가하면서 결국 기존의 기능이 쓸모없어져가는 지점에까지 다다르게 만드는데, 이 ‘소진’을 통해 예측불가능하게 ‘재발견’하는 쾌에 도달하는 것은 좀 더 명확히 보고, 듣고, 만지기 위해 다소 파멸적인 경험을 지속하는 수행과 같다. 취약함을 부정하기보다 그에 대항하고, 명료하게 보기위해 오히려 더 망가트리는 실험을 지속하며, 기성품과 나의 몸이 맺는 관계 속 낭만과 순진함에 천착한다.
머피의 설치는 곳곳에서 진동과 소리를 만들어낸다. 삶의 궤적처럼, 설치는 혼란스러워 보이지만 그 가운데에서 반리듬적(inharmonic / non-harmonic)규칙과 리듬을 찾아가는 실천이다. 고정돼 있지 않은 살아있는 설치이며, 권력 없는 마리오네트 무대이다.
최근에는 어렴풋한 기억 (reminiscence)을 비롯하여 가련하고 어설프고 고갈된 감정이 허구적으로 조작되어 불러일으켜지는 현상에 천착하여 가짜향수(Fake Nostalgia)를 생성하는 이미지를 연구하고 있다. 머피는 작업을 통해 세상을 관찰하는데에 있어 유동적이고 평평한 방식을 제안한다.
